Who Are We?
For nearly a century, the American Legion Auxiliary has been serving, helping, and meeting the needs of our nation’s veterans, military, and their families—both here and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
Patriotism and veterans advocacy are so important to the American Legion Auxiliary that for a century, we’ve been serving, educating, and giving to America’s finest—our military.
We answer the call of Service Not Self. We are the male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion. Some of us are veterans ourselves.
Founded in 1919 during the first National Convention of The American Legion, the ALA has grown to be one of the largest veterans support organizations. And we’d love for you to be part of our mission outreach.
Our Unit 24 American Legion Auxiliary is an active part of Post 24's service, participating, hosting, and supporting the many activities in Alexandria. All current and prospective members are welcome to join Alexandria's American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24's monthly meetings.
Membership Information
Membership in the American Legion Auxiliary is open to veterans and their relatives as follows:
- Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, male and female spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion
- All women who of their own right are eligible for membership in The American Legion
- Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States during a variety of eligible periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge.

If you value patriotism, responsible citizenship, volunteerism, and advocacy for veterans, the military, and their families, you will feel right at home in the American Legion Auxiliary. You can educate school children about our nation’s flag, assemble care packages to send to our troops, or volunteer at your local VA medical center. As a member of Unit 24, you’ll have a ready-made support system and hands-on opportunities to serve our veterans and community.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 sponsors community and veterans' events throughout the year
- Unit 24 sponsors Virginia Girls State. This event, held on the campus of Longwood University in June, provides leadership and government learning opportunities for young women who have completed their junior year of high school.
- Memorial Day Poppies
- Cinco de Mayo Party
- Wine and Cheese socials
- Family Events
- Military and Veterans' programs
Are you a woman veteran or servicemember or do you know someone who is? A woman eligible for American Legion membership is also eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary regardless of whether she is a member of The American Legion.
- ALA members volunteer 7.1 million hours per year serving mission outreach with a collective value that averages $1.1 billion
- ALA contributes $11 million to support youth, scholarships, and communities each year, and contributes $1 million to benefit children
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 is an Active Part of the Post 24 Community
- Unit 24 members join Post 24 American Legion members in hosting special events across the community and in the Clubroom throughout the year.
- ALA Unit 24 members also have the opportunity to serve as volunteer bartenders, assistant bartenders, and kitchen assistants in Clubroom 24
Unit 24 Auxiliary Monthly Meeting
Current and prospective members are welcome to join Alexandria's American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24's monthly meetings:
- When: The second Wednesday of each month
- Where: Clubroom 24, American Legion Post 24, 400 Cameron Street, Alexandria VA
- Time: 8pm
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 sponsors several programs to include:
- Virginia Girls State
- Poppy Sales for Legion
- Various American Legion Post 24 events and programs
