How to Join Alexandria Post 24
REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN THE AMERICAN LEGION
IMPORTANT: EVERYONE MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF DD 214 OR PROOF OF SERVICE.
NEW MEMBERSHIP
Eligible veterans applying for first time membership must meet eligibility criteria below and submit the following information to the Post 24 Membership Committee:
- Download, print, and complete American Legion Membership application, or Pick up application at the Post 24 Clubroom.
- Bring completed application to Post 24 Clubroom or mail to Post 24 address below, together with your Membership Dues of $55 annually. Make checks payable to "American Legion Post 24". If mailing your application, please do not send cash. Membership dues can be paid by cash, check, or credit card at the Clubroom.
- Include COPY OF DD214 OR PROOF OF SERVICE (see detail under "Proof of Service")
- If the information is correct, membership will be approved and a membership card will be mailed to you.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
MEMBERS are eligible to join the American Legion if they served at least one day of active military duty in the U.S. Military since December 7, 1941, and were honorably discharged or are still serving honorably.

Proof of Service (DD-214/Travel Orders)
The DD Form 214 is a complete and thorough document that verifies a service member's proof of military service. This Certificate of Release or Discharge form is issued through the Department of Defense and is typically issued at the final outprocessing appointment prior to retirement or separation.
U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs has all the different methods to obtain your own or a family members military records to include DD-214 or other military service records.
For active duty members as its illegal to photocopy military identification cards, so we accept any travel orders that include your name in place of a DD-214.
For security purposes, please black out the Social Security Number on your official documents before submitting.
Transfers
Transfer Membership to Post 24
Veterans applying for transfers from your current Post to Post 24, please follow these steps:
- Visit the Clubroom at 400 Cameron St. (check hours of operation) to obtain and fill out a Transfer Member Data Form
- Submit Transfer Member Data Form along with a copy of your DD-214 or Proof of Service and show membership card
- Pay Post 24 membership dues of $55 if current year dues have not been paid. If current dues are paid at previous post, dues can be paid later for the following year's Post 24 membership.
